5 Signs Your Gym Clothes Need Replacing

Gym clothes don't last forever, even the expensive ones. Most people hang onto their workout gear way too long, training in shirts that have lost their stretch and shorts that don't wick sweat anymore. Here are five signs it's time to retire your favourites and pick up something fresh.

1. They Smell Even After Washing

If your gym shirt comes out of the wash smelling fine but starts reeking 10 minutes into your warm-up, the fabric is done. Synthetic materials trap bacteria in their fibres over time, and no amount of regular washing will fix it. This is normal wear and tear, not a laundry problem.

Try this first: Soak in white vinegar and cold water for 30 minutes before washing. If the smell comes back within one workout, it's time to replace.

2. The Fabric Has Lost Its Stretch

That compression shirt that used to fit like a second skin now hangs loose around your midsection? The elastane (spandex) in the fabric has broken down. This happens faster with hot water washing and tumble drying. Once the stretch is gone, so is the performance benefit.

This applies to compression wear, leggings, sports bras, and any fitted gym clothing.

3. Visible Wear: Pilling, Thinning, Holes

Pilling (those little fabric balls) is cosmetic at first but signals that the fabric is breaking down. Thinning around the armpits or inner thighs means you're one heavy set away from a wardrobe malfunction. Don't wait for the hole.

4. The Moisture Wicking Stopped Working

New performance fabrics pull sweat to the surface where it evaporates quickly. Old ones just get wet and stay wet, exactly like cotton. If your "quick-dry" shirt is still damp 20 minutes after your workout, the wicking treatment has worn off.

5. They Don't Fit Your Body Anymore

If you've been training consistently, your body has probably changed. Shirts that are too tight in the shoulders, shorts that are snug in the quads. That's progress. Reward it with gear that actually fits your current build.

How Long Should Gym Clothes Last?

Item Expected Lifespan Replace When
T-shirts and tanks 6-12 months (heavy use) Smell won't wash out, fabric thinning
Shorts 12-18 months Waistband stretched, liner worn
Compression gear 6-9 months Lost elasticity, sagging
Joggers 12-18 months Knees bagging, drawstring fraying
Training shoes 6-12 months or 500-800km Sole worn smooth, lost cushion
Hoodies 18-24 months Zipper failing, fleece matted

Make Your Gear Last Longer

  • Wash in cold water. Heat destroys elastane and moisture-wicking coatings.
  • Skip the fabric softener. It clogs moisture-wicking pores.
  • Hang dry instead of tumble drying.
  • Don't leave sweaty clothes in your bag overnight. Hang them to air out as soon as you get home.
  • Rotate between 2-3 sets so each one gets more rest between washes.
