Gym Clothes for Your Body Type
Not everyone has the same build, and gym clothes aren't one-size-fits-all. A shirt that looks great on someone 5'8" with a broad chest is going to fit completely differently on someone 6'3" and lean. Getting the right fit for your body type makes a real difference in how you train and how you feel doing it.
Tall and Lean

The biggest problem for tall guys: shirts that are too short and shorts that look like compression wear. You need length more than width.
- Tops: Look for "tall" or "longline" fits. Oversized tees work well because the extra fabric gives you the length you need without looking sloppy.
- Bottoms: Joggers with tapered legs look proportional on longer frames. Avoid shorts that are too short; mid-thigh or just above the knee works best.
- Avoid: Cropped or boxy shirts that ride up during overhead movements.
Short and Stocky
The goal is to avoid looking overwhelmed by fabric. Too-long shirts and baggy shorts make a shorter frame look even shorter.
- Tops: Fitted or slim-fit gym tees that end at the belt line. V-necks can visually elongate your torso.
- Bottoms: Shorts that hit above the knee (5-7 inch inseam). This makes your legs look longer.
- Avoid: Oversized everything. It swallows your frame.
Muscular and Broad

You've earned the muscle, so clothes that show your physique make sense. But too-tight gear restricts blood flow and limits your range of motion.
- Tops: Compression shirts for training, slightly relaxed gym tees for everything else. Tank tops are your best friend for arm and shoulder mobility.
- Bottoms: Shorts with stretch fabric. Tapered joggers with elastane blend so your quads aren't suffocating.
- Avoid: Stiff fabrics that don't stretch. If you can't squat in them, they're too tight.
Athletic/Average Build
You've got the most flexibility in what you can wear. Most standard gym clothes are designed for this body type. Focus on performance features over fit correction.
- Tops: Regular fit gym shirts and tanks
- Bottoms: Any cut of shorts or joggers that feels comfortable
- Focus on: Fabric quality and features (moisture-wicking, stretch, pockets) rather than fit adjustments
