What to Wear: Pilates vs Yoga vs HIIT

Pilates, yoga, and HIIT might all happen in the same studio, but they need completely different gear. Wearing the wrong clothes can actually get in the way of your workout. Here's what works for each style.

What to Wear for Pilates

Fitted joggers for pilates workout

Pilates is all about controlled movement, alignment, and core engagement. Your instructor needs to see your form, and your clothes need to stay put during rolls, planks, and leg circles.

  • Top: Fitted, stretchy top that won't ride up. A compression shirt or form-fitting gym tee works perfectly.
  • Bottom: Fitted joggers or leggings. Avoid baggy shorts since they bunch up during floor work and inversions.
  • Footwear: Most Pilates is done barefoot or in grippy socks. Leave the trainers at home.

What to Wear for Yoga

Yoga demands maximum flexibility from your clothes. You'll be moving through poses that stretch every part of your body, so anything restrictive is out.

  • Top: A fitted tank top or slim-fit tee that won't flip over your head in downward dog. Cotton blends work well here since yoga is lower-sweat than cardio.
  • Bottom: Stretchy joggers or compression leggings. The key is four-way stretch fabric. You need to go from warrior pose to pigeon without your pants fighting you.
  • Key feature: A high, secure waistband. Low-rise anything will slide down during forward folds.

What to Wear for HIIT

Lightweight shorts for HIIT training

HIIT is the opposite of yoga. It's fast, sweaty, and chaotic. You're jumping, sprinting, lifting, and dropping to the floor. Your gear needs to handle all of it.

  • Top: Lightweight, moisture-wicking gym shirt or tank. This is the one workout where cotton is a terrible idea.
  • Bottom: Athletic shorts with a secure waistband and a brief liner. Or compression shorts if you prefer.
  • Footwear: Cross-trainers with lateral support. Running shoes are too narrow for side-to-side movements.
